Students from Karratha and Hedland senior high schools got their artistic juices flowing last month at a series of creative writing workshops.

The Pilbara Creative Writing Camp was organised by KSHS and featured a full weekend of workshops, the highlight of which was the sessions at Cossack with award wining writer A.J. (Amanda) Betts, whose novel Zac and Mia has been turned into a TV series in the US.

English teacher Sarah French said the students were excited to meet an author who who had had her work turned into a TV show.

“They came away saying A.J. had given them lots of interesting ideas for how to get started and continue writing,” she said.

The students were given insight into the inspiration for the author’s novels and participated in many sessions to help them unlock their inner novelists.

Ms French said the camp was important for the Pilbara’s creatively minded students who don’t have the same opportunities to engage with authors as those down in Perth.

“It really helps to reinforce how important being creative is and is a great chance to meet students from other schools who are also interested in creative writing,” she said.
