The Tactical Response Group was called to a Maylands apartment to negotiate with a man who was seen striking a door with an axe.

Police received several calls about a disturbance inside an apartment at the East Street unit complex at 2.45pm on Thursday.

Information provided to police was that a man was repeatedly striking a security door with an axe and a knife, causing damage to it and the wooden door behind it.

Police attempted to speak with the man from a nearby unit but no response was received and additional officers, including the TRG were called to the scene.

A negotiator attempted to speak to the man and when no response was received, TRG officers forced their way into the unit.

A man was arrested without incident, while police seized an axe and a knife from the unit.

A 28-year-old Maylands man has been charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear, criminal damage and breach of protective bail conditions.
