The date for Geek Pride Day is rumoured to have been chosen in line with the release of the first Star Wars film Episode IV: A New Hope on May 25, 1977.

The precise reason behind May 25 trumping May 4 as the official date of celebration for Geek Pride Day is yet to be determined.

Some of the first isolated geek pride events are recorded to have been held at a New York bar between 1998-2000.

Supergeek and father of the programmable logic controller — an industrial digital computer developed in the 1960s and 1970s — Dick Morley also organised geek pride events in the US as early as 2001.

However, it wasn’t until 2006 when Spanish blogger German Martinez — known online as Senor Buebo — organised the first official Geek Pride Day celebration and brought it to the world’s attention.

Three hundred geeks took to the streets of Madrid to demonstrate their pride with a human Pac-Man, resulting in the creation of a manifesto to solidify the rights and responsibilities held by those who identified as being geeks.

Geek Pride Day is closely aligned with Towel Day celebrated on the same date, where fans carry a towel to honour the author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams.
